The female dog's reproductive cycle is called estrus, or "heat." It normally lasts for approximately 2 to 4 weeks. How long a bitch actually is in heat may vary from one dog to another and from one breed to another.


Stages of Heat Cycle:

1. Proestru: This is the first stage of the heat cycle, and it lasts around 7 to 10 days. During this time, you will notice swelling of the vulva, in addition to a bloody discharge. Though male dogs may start showing interest in the female during this period, she is still not ready to mate.


2. Estrus: This is the second phase, also called "standing heat," and it will last approximately for 5 to 10 days. The discharge changes to light color, and this is when the female allows mating. It is during this phase that ovulation takes place.


3. Diestrus: This period, upon the completion of estrus, may last approximately 60 to 90 dayswhen the dog is not pregnant. The vulva goes back to its normal size and the discharge stops.


4. Anestrus It is the last stage and is a resting phase, which can last for 4 to 6 months . During this time, the dog's reproductive tract is quiescent, only to start a new heat cycle again.


An average female dog would be in heat two times a year, but again, it depends on the breed and individuality of the dog.
