How To Save A Choking Dog in 30 Seconds

A choking dog is a true emergency, so act fast and stay calm. If you can see the object, carefully try to remove it, then do 5 quick upward abdominal thrusts and get veterinary help immediately.

What to do right away

  • Open the mouth and gently pull the tongue forward.

  • If the object is visible, remove it carefully without pushing it deeper.

  • Give 5 rapid abdominal thrusts just behind the ribs, lifting inward and upward.

  • If the object still won’t come out, keep trying and get to a vet as fast as possible.

Signs your dog may be choking

Look for gagging, pawing at the mouth, trouble breathing, blue or pale gums, and panic or weakness. If your dog collapses or stops breathing, emergency care is needed immediately.

Prevention tips

Keep bones, toys, and small objects out of reach, and always supervise dogs while eating. Choosing the right chew size and avoiding hard, splintering treats can lower the risk of choking.
